Storms in Collier County damage Vanderbilt Beach.

Following a week of heavy rainfall in Collier County, parts of the beach berm in North Naples are starting to disintegrate. Walls about 2 feet high have begun to appear north and south of Vanderbilt Beach, near the Turtle Club restaurant, according to a recent article by Ryan Arbogast of NBC2.

“The weather created 4 to 6-foot waves coming from our southern coast and elsewhere… causing enormous erosion and destruction along the coastline,” stated Professor Felix Jose, Chairman of the Florida Gulf shore University Water School (FGCU).

Last year, Collier County spent over $30 million on an emergency beach berm project to replenish our coastline following Hurricane Ian. The majority of the berm is intact; however, certain areas have eroded due to heavy rains.

“The terrible scenario was that the County brought in a lot of sediment and sand, but they didn’t give it enough time to settle. There was no vegetation growth or anything that would keep the sand in place. That takes time for plants to grow,” Jose explained.
