Rising lethal infection prompts Collier Domestic Animal Services to restrict cat admission.
For the time being, you will be unable to bring a stray, community, or owner-surrender cat into Collier County Domestic Animal Services. They’ve recently witnessed an increase in feline panleukopenia (FPV), a fatal virus.
The FPV virus is highly infectious and only infects cats. While it is not harmful to humans or other animals, it can be lethal to unvaccinated or immunocompromised cats, according to a recent article by Kaitlin Knapp of FOX4.
“DAS has implemented rigorous preventative measures through proper sanitization, use of personal protective equipment, and continued medical care for all shelter animals,” according to a statement from Collier County. “This proactive approach involves administering preventative medical treatments to our feline population and providing specialized care to cats exposed to FPV.”
Although admission is suspended, DAS stated that healthy and vaccinated cats are available for adoption.
It is unclear when the temporary suspension will be lifted.
According to their website, 160 cats are available for adoption.
