Naples City Council approves millage rate increase

For the first time since 2020, Naples city councilors voted to hike the millage rate.

Jay Boodheshwar is Naples’ city manager. “Moving from 1.17 to 1.23 mills will generate about $2 million additional dollars,” he stated.

He claims the extra money is required for public safety. Additionally, he states that over a million cars pass through the city during peak season, according to a recent article by Dominga Murray of FOX4.

“Over the last ten years, our public safety forces have not grown. We have the same number of firefighters as we did 20 years ago, and the same number of police officers as we did ten or more years ago,” he remarked.

Because of the increased number of visitors, more first responders are required.

“The additional millage that council tentatively approved during the public hearing is primarily focused on raising some additional dollars to find public safety enhancements,” said the mayor.

Here’s the mathematical breakdown: For example, if you own a million-dollar home, you will pay $60 extra in property taxes under this new rate. Every additional $1 million in taxable value equals $60.
