Miami man killed in Naples 5-car crash; driver flees police

A Miami passenger in a car escaping police was killed when the driver blew a red light in Naples on Monday afternoon.

Florida Highway Patrol reported that troopers responded to a call regarding a 2024 Kia sedan that had evaded the Collier County Sheriff’s Office on Interstate 75 at approximately 1:45 p.m.

The Kia sped south on Logan Boulevard, the driver disregarding a traffic signal at Vanderbilt Beach Road. A trooper reported that the Kia collided with four vehicles, according to a recent article by Naples Daily News.

Troopers reported that the driver of the Kia, Jason David Petion, 22, from Miami, sustained critical injuries. He lacked a driver’s license and had an outstanding warrant for evading law enforcement in Dade County. He had two passengers: a 30-year-old male who sustained critical injuries, and a 30-year-old man who died due to his injuries at the hospital.

According to troopers, the drivers from Naples, involved in four other vehicles, experienced minor injuries. There are four women, aged 46, 73, 18, and 42.

Petion has been discharged from the hospital and is currently in Collier County Jail, where he faces charges of vehicular homicide, fleeing and eluding police resulting in death, and driving without a license that led to death.

The incident is still being looked into.
