March: The Month of Awakening

March brings the first whispers of spring, longer days, and a renewed sense of adventure. Named after Mars, the Roman god of war, the month originally marked the start of the year in the early Roman calendar. It is a time of transition, where winter fades, and new life emerges.

In Naples, Florida, March is one of the most vibrant months of the year. Snowbirds are still enjoying the warm Gulf breezes, and locals embrace outdoor festivals, parades, and spring celebrations. From St. Patrick’s Day festivities to the Naples National Art Festival, there’s no shortage of things to do!

Let’s explore the key dates, historical facts, and local events that make March special.

Key National Dates in March

March 1 – Start of Meteorological Spring

Although the official first day of spring falls on March 20, meteorologists consider March 1 the start of spring weather patterns. Naples enjoys sunny days with average temperatures ranging from 63°F to 81°F–perfect for beach outings and boat trips.

March 10 – Daylight Saving Time Begins

At 2:00 AM, we “spring forward” by setting our clocks ahead one hour. Though we lose an hour of sleep, longer evenings mean more time for sunset strolls along Naples Pier!

March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day

While most people associate St. Patrick’s Day with Ireland and green beer, the holiday has a rich history. The tradition of wearing green comes from Irish folklore, where it was believed green made you invisible to leprechauns–who would otherwise pinch you!

In Italian culture, St. Joseph’s Day is a day to honor Joseph, the patron saint of workers and fathers. It’s also an important day for those with Sicilian and Neapolitan roots, like many families in Southwest Florida. Traditional foods include Zeppole (Italian cream-filled pastries), which can be found at several Naples bakeries.

March 20 – Spring Equinox (First Day of Astronomical Spring)

Spring officially begins in the Northern Hemisphere at 11:06 PM (EDT). The equinox means day and night are nearly equal in length. It’s the perfect time to enjoy Naples’ blooming bougainvillea, perfect beach weather, and outdoor festivals.

March 31 – Easter Sunday

Easter is a significant holiday for many, and Naples hosts sunrise services on the beach, egg hunts for kids, and special brunches at local restaurants.
