Collier County Schools rezoning may impact 2,000 elementary pupils.

After months of debating the impending rezoning, the Collier County School Board convened for a work session to finalize specifics in front of an audience.

During Wednesday’s meeting, the district stated that the rezoning might effect up to 2,000 elementary kids, but Vice Chair Stephanie Lucarelli believes it must be completed, according to a recent article by Bella Line of Fox4.

“I’ve been requesting this rezone boundary modification for several years and with each year seeing the influx of people coming in realizing that the longer we wait and the more we kick this can down the road, the harder it’s going to be for families,”Lucarelli said.

With Laurel Oaks Elementary School at a staggering 180% capacity, the district claims to be making an effort to reduce the strain. A parent claims that it is ultimately having an impact on other schools as well.

A parent at Veterans Memorial Elementary School named Stephanie Jonas said, “We’re trying to make sense of a very confusing situation. Our concern has always just been that the focus needs to be out east and we don’t understand why the west is getting affected.”

Due to an unclear scenario that has arisen during these sessions, parents and staff from Naples Park Elementary—which may be experiencing an inflow of new students—have now been invited to attend.

Teacher Darcie Argabright of Naples Park stated, “We want to put this behind us so that we can go back to just loving our kids and finishing the school year knowing which direction we’re heading towards in the fall.”

By the end of the discussion, it was evident that parents and staff were simply waiting for a response.

On May 14, the school board will select one of the two suggested ideas or order the district personnel to start over from scratch.
