Cleo, a serval at the Naples Zoo, passes away from a kidney illness.

An illness common to elderly cats claimed the life of an African cat at the Naples Zoo.

A serval named Cleo, who had been in the zoo since 2014, reportedly died of serious kidney disease, according to a social media post.

When the serval was just a few weeks old, she and her brother Baku visited the Naples Zoo, according to a recent article by Paul Dolan of WINK News.

Even with hospital stays and supportive treatment, Cleo’s kidneys were unable to return to normal, despite occasional signals of progress.

Naples Zoo announced on social media that “Cleo will be remembered as the sassy sister who sat tall and represented the beauty of African servals.”

Baku, Cleo’s brother, is under constant observation. However, given that servals are primarily solitary in the wild, Baku should adjust to life as a dog quite well.
