Umbrella-carrying man accused of stealing tens of thousands in Naples antique jewels

The Naples Police Department launched an investigation after a man carrying an umbrella broke into Treasure Island Antiques and stole tens of thousands of dollars in jewels.

The incident occurred on May 29 at approximately 11 p.m.

The odd burglary was filmed on the store’s surveillance cameras, according to a recent article by Madison Monroe Adams of NBC2.

A white sedan dropped the burglar off on Central Avenue, and he began heading towards the company.

Despite the fact that it was not raining, the man was dressed in black apparel, including a mask, and gloves. He was also carrying an umbrella. He used the umbrella to shield his face from the cameras.

The man shattered the glass front door with a rock before climbing through the door frame and into the antique store.

“He knew exactly where he was headed. He knew where the cases were,” said Wilton Wood, proprietor of Treasure Island Antiques.

Wood claimed the man shattered the cases containing the most valuable jewels and stole as much as he could fit into a rucksack. Tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of jewelry was stolen in less than five minutes.

“That was unusual. He knew where the cameras were. He knew how to angle the umbrella to disguise his face. That was his primary goal, to disguise his face,” Wood added.

The thief even left something behind: a calling card that could reveal his identify.

“Sounds strange, little psycho, doesn’t it? He left it on the side of the building. It was like a shark, a kid’s drawing, a shark, a scope, like crosshairs or something,” Wood explained. “Then, like an automobile, very basic sketches of it. And it said Monday, whatever that means, on pieces of paper taped to the window screen.”

NPD is requesting anyone with knowledge about the burglary to come forward. The police department can be reached at 239-213-4844.
