20 Collier County intersections will have blue lights to deter red light runners.
Two months following a tragic crash that impacted the community, Collier County is implementing tiny blue lights at traffic signals across 20 major intersections to assist deputies in apprehending drivers who run red lights. This new system is expected to discourage traffic violations and enhance the safety of local roads.
The plan was recently approved by the county during their meeting on November 12th.
The system operates in such a way that the blue lights will illuminate in coordination with the red lights, acting as a signal for nearby deputies when a driver improperly crosses the intersection.
This system is designed to facilitate the monitoring of intersections by deputies and to identify drivers who may endanger others.
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office stated to Fox 4 News, “The installation of these blue lights at intersections should facilitate our efforts as law enforcement officers in enforcing red-light-running violations. The blue lights will enable a single deputy to oversee the intersections, whereas previously it required several deputies to manage one intersection.”
The following intersections will have blue lights installed:
- Golden Gate Pkwy / Santa Barbara Blvd
- Vanderbilt Beach Rd / Livingston Rd
- Immokalee Rd / Collier Blvd
- Vanderbilt Beach Rd / Collier Blvd
- Immokalee Rd / Livingston Rd
- Golden Gate Pkwy / Livingston Rd
- Pine Ridge Rd / Livingston Rd
- Immokalee Rd / US 41 (State Road)
- Pine Ridge Rd / Collier Blvd
- Pine Ridge Rd / Airport Pulling Rd
- Davis Blvd / Collier Blvd (State Road)
- Immokalee Rd / Juliet Blvd
- Collier Blvd / Golden Gate Blvd
- Rattlesnake Hammock Rd / US 41 (State Road)
- Davis Blvd / Santa Barbara Blvd (State Road)
- Davis Blvd / Airport Pulling Rd (State Road)
- Pine Ridge Rd / Goodlette-Frank Rd
- Golden Gate Blvd / Wilson Blvd
- Vanderbilt Beach Rd / Airport Pulling Rd
- Immokalee Rd / Logan Blvd
Prominent on that list is the intersection of Logan Blvd and Immokalee, where a mother tragically lost her life when a truck driver did not stop at a red light. The Collier County Sheriff’s Office reports a rise in crashes related to red light violations in recent months.
As the “season” draws near, we can expect to see a rise in the number of vehicles on our roadways. The CCSO stated, “With the rise in vehicle traffic on our roadways, the blue lights are expected to enhance driver awareness regarding the significance of red-light running.”
County leaders express enthusiasm for this change, yet they emphasize that safety relies on the actions of drivers.
“I want to remind everyone driving on our roads to follow the traffic laws, to do so mindfully and with intention, ensuring the safety of all,” stated Commissioner Chris Hall.
The anticipated cost of the project is approximately $160,000.
